Water toxicity in reservoirs after freshwater algae harvest

چکیده

Blooms of microalgae and cyanobacteria increase every year, presenting great problems for the environment. Finding a way harvesting these could be useful water governance. Furthermore, method should not cause cell lysis thus avoiding discharging toxins into water. Three reservoirs were studied, two them with eutrophication (As Conchas A Baxe) another (Salas) no such problems. different methods studied; electroflocculation (EF) application time being varied; centrifugation, times speeds finally, natural sedimentation. The highest efficiency was obtained in culture from Baxe, which had higher initial absorbance value (1.664), using EF (90.64% an 2 min 30 s) centrifugation at 4000 rpm (92.25% for2 minutes, 92.73% 5 min). Electrofloculation can obtain up to 84% more biomass than sedimentation alone. Sample toxicity studied before after Microcystest found harvesting. It observed that same sample, yield greater was. For Baxe min, speed 2000 87.02%, figure 0.94 ?g/L obtained, while 92.25% 1.05 ?g/L. limit set by World Health Organization (WHO) is 1 ?g/L, this small difference seems key. With results, study concludes chlorophyll levels may interfere test used. Future tests or analyses developed so as avoid interference, alter toxin values. Electroflocculation promising since it does Microcystis aeruginosa, whereas give Finally, worth highlighting importance performing measurements check viable ecosystems.

Dissolved methane in Indian freshwater reservoirs.

Emission of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, from tropical reservoirs is of interest because such reservoirs experience conducive conditions for CH4 production through anaerobic microbial activities. It has been suggested that Indian reservoirs have the potential to emit as much as 33.5 MT of CH4 per annum to the atmosphere. However, this estimate is based on assumptions rather than actu...

Algae as Reservoirs for Coral Pathogens

Benthic algae are associated with coral death in the form of stress and disease. It's been proposed that they release exudates, which facilitate invasion of potentially pathogenic microbes at the coral-algal interface, resulting in coral disease. However, the original source of these pathogens remains unknown. This study examined the ability of benthic algae to act as reservoirs of coral pathog...

Novel Synechococcus Genomes Reconstructed from Freshwater Reservoirs

Freshwater picocyanobacteria including Synechococcus remain poorly studied at the genomic level, compared to their marine representatives. Here, using a metagenomic assembly approach we discovered two novel Synechococcus sp. genomes from two freshwater reservoirs Tous and Lake Lanier, both sharing 96% average nucleotide identity and displaying high abundance levels in these two lakes located at...
